Speedcoat-49 - Fast Boats -
APPLICATION GUIDE AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION Properties Speedcoat-49 is a water based silicone-epoxy coating having unique release properties while adhering to a broad range of substrates including wood, concrete, fiberglass, metals, and most plastics including epoxies, polyurethanes, and alkyds. Speedcoat-49 is a hydrophobic coating that has a low surface tension when in contact with water. As a bottom coat on boats, improved speed, as well as less fuel consumption are readily noticed. Speedcoat-49 is especially recommended for reduction in drag resistance through water. Speedcoat-49 is akin but not quite as hard as Wearlon® Super F-1M having slightly less filler content to allow polishing of the coating. Mixing Instructions Speedcoat-49 is a 2 component product, packaged in 1-gallon and 5-gallon kits containing the proper ratio of ingredients. The entire contents of each container should be mixed together. For quantities less than the pre-packaged kit, mix as follows: To 11 parts of the A component, mix in 2 parts of the B component. Mix the A and the B until completely blended. NO INDUCTION PERIOD NECESSARY...Spray immediately. Thinning and Clean up In most cases it is not necessary to thin Speedcoat-49. A mono-layer is sometimes applied just prior to a race and allowed to cure for at least 12 hours. This is achieved by diluting the catalyzed coating 3 to 1 with water and applying a light coating or polishing as mentioned below. Clean up by using soap and water while Speedcoat-49 is in an uncured state. Application and Recoating Product can be rolled, brushed or sprayed. For best results, spray Speedcoat-49 on most surfaces for a total of 3 to 4 mil dry coating. Make sure the surface temperature is above 40°F and the relative humidity is below 90% before coating. Allow at least 24 hours and ideally one week of curing before putting into service. Do not use harsh chemicals for cleaning - a simple hand wipe or a light scrape is adequate for removing fouling. If a Speedcoat-49 surface has become damaged or has excessive wear, then an occasional touch-up may be required. This can be achieved by simply spraying 1 to 3 wet mils of the Speedcoat-49 over the existing surface and allowing it to cure for at least 24 hours prior to putting it back in service. If poor wetting occurs while applying coatings, then lightly roughen the dry surface with 400 grit sandpaper and wipe with a dampened acetone rag prior to top-coating with Speedcoat-49. A golf ball dimpled surface can be achieved by using a ¼ inch nap Mohair Roller and applying the freshly catalyzed coating. If the coating is immediately rubbed out or polished after applying, using a soft sponge or cotton rag, a smooth mono-layer of coating is left on the substrate resulting in a reduction of surface tension with water for improved speed with the least amount of add-on weight. Post heating after coating, or pre-warming the substrate prior to coating will speed up the curing. Caution: Extremely Slippery—care must be followed when transporting or walking on this surface.
