Hydrophobicity

Friction reduction of water through a 4-inch hydraulic pipe
(As measured by the Institute of Hydraulic Research at the University of Iowa.)

Frictionless Coated
Frictionless Uncoated

Testing

  • Testing conducted by the Institute of Hydraulic Research at the University of Iowa on 4-inch diameter pipe distinctly demonstrated that water velocity is accelerated when the inside of pipes is coated with Wearlon.
  • Tests at the University of Buffalo comparing Wearlon coatings to that of conventional epoxies used in marine clearly demonstrated that less drag resistance can be obtained when Wearlon coatings are used.
  • ASTM 3623 marine tests of Wearlon products at Battelle Labs have concluded, resulting in the adoption of Wearlon by the US Navy for its superior abrasion and excellent hydrophobic properties.
Results
  • As reported in Hydro Review magazine, Wearlon is credited for increasing the hydroelectric output by numbers as high as 8% at the Gananoque Light and Power Facility.
  • Wearlon coatings, in particular Speedcoat-49, offer the potential for boats and vessels to move at a higher speed through water, as well as reducing gasoline consumption. This is becoming an attraction to watercraft racers and racing teams.
